Join Columns & Coffee as we tour this Denver and National landmark, arranged by LIV Sotheby’s International Realty professionals Casey Miller, Carly Wells, and Dan Fead, along with the generous owners of the Richthofen Castle. Originally designed by Alexander Cazin in 1887, with additions and remodels by Maurice Biscoe & Henry Hewitt and Jacques B. Benedict in 1910 and 1924 respectively, this turreted mansion has long served as the historic anchor for the Montclair neighborhood in east Denver.
In May, 2012, Steve Raabe wrote in the Denver Post: “The 35-room estate was built by the uncle of Baron Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron flying ace of World War I. Baron Walter von Richthofen, a Prussian immigrant turned Colorado mining baron, conceived the idea for the limestone castle in the 1870s and finished it in 1887. He planned – unsuccessfully, as it turned out – to have it serve as the catalyst for an upscale residential development in what was then a dusty prairie five miles east of downtown Denver.” Several Victorian-era mansions were built nearby, but most of the area remained undeveloped until decades later.
Location: At 8:30am meet for coffee at QUINCE ESSENTIAL COFFEE HOUSE, 1447 Quince Street, Denver, which is the 3rd house south of Colfax on the west side of Quince. Following coffee we will meet at the Richthofen Castle at 7020 E. 12th Avenue, Denver, CO 80220, at the SW corner of Pontiac Street (look for the circle driveway gates midway on the block of E. 12 Avenue, on the south side).
