Join Columns & Coffee as we tour the recent renovation of this Mediterranean Revival style house centered in the historic Belcaro neighborhood. The house was originally designed in 1928 by the renowned Denver architectural firm of Fisher and Fisher, commissioned by Mrs. John Walter Best (née Florence Kountze), whose father Charles B. Kountze and his brothers were known in banking and finance circles the world over at the turn of the century. Florence’s mother was Mary Estabrook, who descended from a distinguished Colonial family going back to William Bradford (the Mayflower).
Thanks in part to Denver realtor Nancy Wolfe of The Wolfe Group the tour of the house will be generously hosted by the current owners who have meticulously renovated the house since purchasing it in 2008, when it was literally saved from destruction. Developers were in the process of tearing down 3125 E. Exposition Avenue to replace it with four new houses on the 1-acre lot when Historic Denver was instrumental in overriding prior decisions and stopping the demolition. When the owners purchased the house it had been “stripped from stem to stern…even the roof tiles had been removed!”
Location: At 8:30am meet for coffee and check-in at DEVIL’S FOOD BAKERY, 1020 S. Gaylord Street in the Old South Gaylord Street Shops, just south of E. Tennessee Avenue (on the east side). Following coffee, we will meet at the Florence Kountze Best House at 3125 E. Exposition Avenue in the Belcaro neighborhood.
